Research Interests

Our overall research of the laboratory is to integrate advances in biology, chemistry and bioinformatics towards development of applications in immunology and cell biology, in particular cancer and immune-based diseases. Our research focuses of two main subjects. 1) Targeted drug delivery systems: Current chemotherapeutic strategies for cancer often lead to significant morbidity and the development of drug resistance. These effects could be overcome by delivering the cytotoxic drugs specifically into the target cancer cells. We developed strategies for selecting cancer peptides from large phage display peptide libraries. When chemically coupled to drugs, these Peptide-Drug-Conjugates (PDCs) kill target cancer cells specifically; they do not lead to drug resistance and can revert drug resistant cancer cells into sensitive ones. We are currently carrying out pre-clinical studies on PDCs for malignant prostate cancer, small cell lung cancer and acute myelogenous leukemia. 2) Immunotherapy for Multiple Myeloma (MM): Despite improved therapies and overall survival, MM remains incurable. Current immunotherapies involving patient-derived bone marrow transplantation do not result in a long lasting anti-tumor immune response. Those involving a donor transplant can induce a vigorous "Graft-versus-Myeloma" response but often induce a fatal "Graft-versus-Host Disease." Our research involves the use of advanced immunological techniques and bioinformatics to study patient or donor T lymphocytes that are Myeloma specific and the separation and clinical application so as to induce a long-lasting anti-myeloma immune response without Graft-versus-Host-Disease.
