Biography

        Professor Barishak was born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1924.  Following completion of his medical degree, residency and chief residency in ophthalmology, Professor Barishak completed two prestigious fellowships: a Proctor fellowship and a fellowship at the Copenhagen Cancer Research Institute’s Fiberger Laboratory.  Continuing his studies in ophthalmic pathology, Professor Barishak immigrated to Israel in 1963.

        Upon arrival in Israel, Professor Barishak was appointed Chief Resident in the Department of Ophthalmology at the Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem.  He later moved to Tel Hashomer Hospital at the University of Tel Aviv, where he established and became Chief of the Ophthalmic Pathology Laboratory.  In 1970, while at the University of Tel Aviv, Professor Barishak established the first ophthalmic hospital in Gaza, where he served as Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology.  Professor Barishak served as Director of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Asaf HaRofe Hospital in Israel from 1976 to 1989.  Professor Barishak established the Department of Ophthalmology at Koret School of Veterinary Medicine in 1986. Presently, Professor Barishak quenches his thirst for knowledge through daily review of the latest ophthalmological and medical research, guiding PhD students in their dissertations, and utilizing his wealth of experience in guiding research at several ophthalmology research units.

        Professor Barishak is the author of the seminal ophthalmology textbook “Embryology of the Eye and Its Adnexae” (Karger) first published in 1992 and republished in 2001.

        Professor Barishak is the chief consultant of the Eye Research Program of the Center for Drug Repurposing at Ariel University determining all research protocols.
