JIMES appears semi-annually (spring and fall) in the following format:

  1. 3 original research articles (English)
  2. 2 original research articles (Hebrew)
  3. 2 scholarly book reviews (English and Hebrew)

Editorial Process

We uphold editorial independence always, and aim to prevent this principle from being violated through conflicts of interest or any other political or corporate influence –as reflected in our editorial processes.

External Editors

External academic editors make final decisions regarding articles submitted to our journals, based on independent peer reviews. The SAPC must approve of Ariel University Press creating a new journal or publishing an established one. The SAPC may also be consulted on ethics, policy changes, or other questions that affecting the business of our journals’ business. SAPC does not decide whether or not to publish individual articles.

Editorial Decisions Policies

All journals should provide policies and procedures for appealing editorial decisions. Individual journals should be contacted for descriptions of these procedures. We consider appeals on editorial decisions for books, but only when new information relevant to the editorial decision has been made available, or if there is reason to believe we did not follow our Ethics Guidelines.

Publication fees

AUP does not charge submission, publication fees, or page charges (as a Ariel University Press publication). Authors wishing to publish any figures, tables and diagrams in color should first consult the Editor-in-Chief. In general, AUP will publish this material free of charge in its online version but will charge the authors for the printed version.

Peer review

AUP strives to provide an essential resource to its readers from a variety of social science disciplines. The criteria for publication in AUP are relevance to its journals’ aims, scientific innovation and high quality. All submissions are peer-reviewed anonymously by two referees.

Peer review is essential to upholding our publications’ standards. AUP:

  1. Provides training, methods, and support for facilitating fair, scrupulous, and effectual peer review for our publications.
  2. Encourages our peer reviewers and editors to become familiar with and follow the relevant best practice guidelines on peer review.
  3. Expects overseers of the peer review process to know how to recognize warning signs of fraudulent or manipulated peer review, and to bring up any concerns by informing AUP (contact list at the bellow of this page).
  4. Supports any peer reviewers or editors in probing and acting on any suspected cases of deceitful or manipulated peer review.
  5. When anonymity is part of the peer review process, participants’ confidentiality must be protected. Confidentiality must also be upheld by authors, peer reviewers, and publishing partners in such cases. The necessary information should be given to support the process where confidentiality is involved.

Book Proposals

Proposals submitted for book publishing are first reviewed by in-house editors, who may consult book series editors or subject specialists outside of the university. If the proposal is accepted for consideration by Ariel University Press, the proposal, it will be sent, along with a sample of its content, to at least two independent peer-reviewers. The latter’s judgment helps the AUP’s Editor-in-Chief to decide whether to recommend publication to Ariel University Publication Committee (AUPC). Finally, the AUPC makes the decision as to whether to grant a publishing contract to a given author. Additional reviews and guidance may be sought by our editors after contracts are granted to help in developing the manuscript.

Authors and their responsibilities:

Ethics of publication

The integrity of the publishing process and of our publications’ content at Ariel University Press is of utmost importance. The best practice principles that we apply to our books and journals are delineated in this document. Authors, editors, and funders, among other groups, should find these guidelines to be helpful. We adhere to standards and best practice guidelines that other relevant industry associations set as well. Any external guidelines we follow are referenced in relevant sections that follow.

Integrity of Research

We adhere to the high standards set by Ariel University, and expect research published by Ariel University Press to abide by these principles:  

  1. Utmost care, honesty, and conscientiousness in research.
  2. Open exchanges of information.
  3. Respect for all research participants.

Besides the general principles above, our book and journal editorial teams should make available to authors detailed policies and guidelines on ethics and integrity that are relevant to their disciplines.

Any person who believes that the above Ethics Guidelines have not been followed in any research published by Ariel University Press should express their concerns to the corresponding editor, or they should email AUP.

AUP guidelines should be followed where possible in raising concerns, or such matters should be brought to the attention of our Ethics Committee if necessary.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is defined as ‘submitting as one’s own work’, irrespective of intent to deceive, that which derives in part or in its entirety from the work of others without due acknowledgement. It is both poor scholarship and a breach of academic integrity.

Examples of plagiarism include duplicating (presenting someone else’s words and/or ideas as one’s own), by:

  1. Quoting exactly someone else’s work and not crediting the other person.
  2. Paraphrasing someone else’s work by changing the order of the words, or some of the words themselves and not properly crediting the source.
  3. Using another person’s ideas and not crediting that source.
  4. Duplicating online sources by cutting and pasting Internet material.
  5. Submitting another person’s work as a portion of one’s own without making clear whose work it is.
  6. Concealing collaboration with an unacknowledged other person can also be plagiarism.

Authors should provide general recognition of any substantive assistance received, i.e., with style and language of written material.

Plagiarism can happen in relation to any kind of media or sources, including:

  1. Computer code, language, musical quotations, and mathematical derivations.
  2. Content downloaded from websites or taken from other media or manuscripts.
  3. Work, whether unpublished or published, including presentations, gray literature, and lectures.

 Plagiarism in any of our publications is not tolerated, and we reserve the right to examine all submissions using plagiarism checking tools. We will reject any submission that contains suspected plagiarism, whether in whole or in part. If plagiarism is found after publication of any material, we will follow the directives contained in AUP Ethics Guidelines. We require our editors, reviewers and readers to bring to our attention any suspected plagiarism, by AUP.

Redundant or Duplicate Publication

Redundant or duplicate publication, termed ‘self-plagiarism’, involves a work or substantial portions thereof being published more than once by the work’s author(s). Whether in a different language or the same one. Redundant publication can happen in the case of significant overlapping of two or more publications without cross-referencing or an adequate rationalization for the overlapping.

We do not tolerate duplicate or redundant publication, unless:

  1. We believe that this will strengthen the academic discussion.
  2. It is approved by the original publication.
  3. The original publication is cited.

We also require that authors may not publish the same manuscript in more than one journal. We require our readers, editors, and reviewers to bring up any suspected duplicate or redundant publication, by contacting AUP

Research Using Animals or Humans

Research that involves animals or humans must receive the approval of the relevant ethics committee(s) and must adhere to international legal and ethical standards for research. We also require that authors respect the right to privacy of human participants, and to acquire the appropriate consent to publish before submitting the material to us. For information on whether authors are required to submit or to include proof in relation to the above, please consult individual submission guidelines or contact the relevant journal or book editor.

Supporting Evidence and Data

We uphold openness and transparency when it comes to materials associated with research such as code and data. Authors should keep correct records of supporting evidence that others may need to verify, comprehend, and replicate findings, and should as well provide access to or supply this supporting evidence upon appropriate request. Ariel University Press offers authors the ability to connect supporting data with their works, either through third party.

Adaptations and Versions

We distribute our publications in numerous different global, many different global cultural, economic, and environmental contexts. Thus, differing versions of our publications may be issued. We do not modify published content, nor do we create new content to respond to ideological or political needs when such actions compromise the accuracy or quality of our published material or violate our Ethics Guidelines. We grant licenses in subsidiary and volume rights to third parties that allow for reuse, adaptation, or reproduction of our published materials in various contexts or languages. We retain the right to withhold approval to publish any content in licensed editions about which we are concerned about accuracy or integrity.

Research Misconduct and Fraudulent Research

AUP and its editors are working to ensure the integrity of the content that we publish, which is our primary concern, and to investigate any suspected fraudulent findings. Appropriate corrections must be issued and retractions made regarding any results found to be fraudulent.

Falsification, Fabrication and Manipulation of Images

Modified images that lead to misrepresentation of data should be avoided by authors. Although there can be legitimate reasons for modifying images, this practice can at times lead to falsification of research results.

Copyright and Access

Open access

AUP’s policy is to be open and readily available to the academic community. Our obligation and commitment is to provide the reader a high level scholarly journal that will make a serious contribution to the discourse in the field.

All authors must sign the publishing agreement and Copyright Agreement, Ethics and Conflict of Interest Disclosure. Authors should get a copy by AUP office after their articled is accepted by the journal(s)’ editor(s).

Archiving

  1. GDPR – General data protection regulation – Since May 2018, AUP and its journals has complied with EU GDPR regulations.
  2. AUP’s editors hold accepted articles’ electronic backup and retaining access to its content in case it is no longer published. All AUP’s journal are published both: online and printed. Authors will receive their published article both as an online version file and its link to the journal’s website; and also as a printed article along with the issue/volume that the article was published within.

Ownership and management

Authorship

Norms vary among the different publication formats and disciplines as to who are listed as authors. Where there are no other specified criteria, the following guidelines regarding authorship should apply, in all research fields:

  1. Contributing significantly to the design or concept of the work; or analyzing, acquiring, or interpreting data for the work.
  2. Revising the work for significant intellectual substance or drafting it.
  3. Giving final approval of the version for publication.
  4. Agreeing to be responsible for every aspect of the work by making sure that any question regarding the work’s correctness or integrity be examined and resolved.

The author of any questioned content is authorized to represent all co-authors as well, and this must be confirmed by the author at the start of the publication process. We are supportive of our editors in handling any disputes regarding authorship – this may include ramping up the dispute. We cooperate with new and established industry standards to increase openness regarding authorship (e.g., ORCID).

Libel, Freedom of Expression, and Defamation

Freedom of expression is essential to us as publishers, but we do not support the publication of incorrect statements that damage the reputation of groups, individuals, or organizations. Our legal team can be consulted on pre-publication libel reviews, and will also deal with libel allegations in reference to any of our publications.

Corrections, Retractions, and Statements of Concern

Journal editors will handle corrections, retractions, and statements of concern according to any journal’s Instructions for Authors. If an error is found to have been made by an author, it will issue a corrigendum. An erratum is issued if it is found that the journal has made an error.

Retractions are usually limited to articles that are flawed so seriously as to make that their conclusions or finding unreliable. Journals publishing accepted manuscripts may make small corrections to errors that occurred during proofreading or typesetting. Substantial corrections, however, will be made following Authors Guidelines.

If a person raises an ethical, legal or security concern about a publication by Ariel University Press, as in the case of books, we would apprise the editor(s) and author(s) of the allegation, as appropriate. Then we would look into the concern, and confer with any third parties involved through discourse or negotiation − or refer the matter to a relevant institution to be investigated.

If the accuracy or integrity of the substance of a work is the subject of concern, we would most likely issue a correction – or a retraction and remove the material in question from sale. A retraction would be handled in such a way that the completeness of the academic record and affiliated works (e.g., other volumes in a series) would be maintained. Any associated metadata and, if possible from a legal standpoint, the abstract would also be preserved.

Marketing Communication

Email and social media and greatly help to spread and to engage with our publications, as well as to increase our readership and to maintain relevancy of our content. However, such communication should never jeopardize integrity of the content or the academic record. All colleagues who are responsible for our social media outlets are must familiarize themselves with relevant Ariel University Press social media policies.

Advertising

We allow appropriate and limited, sometimes targeted, advertising on our online content platform, Ariel University website, and in a number of our publications.

Any advertising must be:

  1. Clearly distinguishable from content.
  2. Independent of editorial decisions regarding what we publish.

We have the right to remove or reject advertising which concerns us due to possible deviation from these Ethics Guidelines. We also advertise our products and services to potential customers. We do so following the guidelines of our data protection regulations, and those of our internal compliance procedures.

Usage, Metrics and Reporting

We are partners with some third parties, which include commercial services, in order to supply metrics for our users to demonstrate how our content is received and its impact. We uphold work by third parties such as EBSCO, ProQuest, Gale and WorldCat among others, and sometimes support their work and that of other such organizations, by providing access, fees, or data. We do not attempt to influence or control such third parties and we are not liable for the rankings or metrics that they produce.

We make every effort to insure that any Ariel University Press publication is free from unwarranted influence. Authors who submit a manuscript to AUP, employees, AUPC, reviewers, and editors of AUP publications, must declare any potential conflicts of interest that might compromise the integrity or objectivity of a publication. Conflicts of interest are situations in which the concerns or aims of a single party or two different parties are incompatible. Conflicts of interest influence the review, presentation, or publication of a piece of work. These interests may be non-financial, financial, professional, personal, or contractual.

Many of our publications must contain a funding statement in addition to a declaring any conflict of interest. We ask that interested parties check on requirements for such declarations with the relevant book or journal editor.

We require as well that anyone suspecting an undeclared conflict of interest regarding a work published or being considered by Ariel University Press let the relevant editor know or email AUP.
